True Professionals

It’s funny how you can meet people. Working in west Texas, I established a networking relationship Diane Dick Legends, a well established modeling agency based in Amarillo. In fact, the majority of the models I had worked with in Lubbock were represented by that agency. They all showed a high level of professionalism, and willingness to work with me.

Moving Away

The worst part of moving away from West Texas was losing the ability to work with the models and their network. When I moved down to Hilltop, I had to start the process over of establishing a network of models to work with. I started putting feelers out on social media for models to work with, and I got a few responses. Kate, who was based near North Zulch, quickly jumped on the idea of working with me. After talking with her, I found out that she was a model represented by Diane Dick Legends as well.

The Idea of the Shoot

Once we moved to Hilltop Lakes, I knew there were locations I wanted to do shoots at. For years when I went to Texas A&M, I would drive to visit my grandparents in Hilltop. On the drive, I would pass through North Zulch in order to get there. As you go through North Zulch, there is an old store that has fallen in to deep disrepair over the years, along with an abandoned truck parked next to the store. For years, I thought that would be a fantastic shoot location, and I took note of it for the future. That was back in the early 2000s.

Working with Kate

Kate was an absolute phenomenal model for this shoot. We first started doing a fashion type shoot, but she brought her ball cap with her, and I thought it made the shoot feel more raw and authentic to the country vibes and environment. So, we decided to lean in more to the country vibe, and I think the shoot turned out even better than I expected.

The Truck

I don't know what it is about abandoned truck, but my photography brain just screams at me anytime I see one. Immediately, I take note of it and say to myself, "That would be a great photograph." I don't know why my brain is wired that way, but there is something about the erosion and degradation of built things that just draws me like a moth to a flame. For years, I passed by this truck going through North Zulch, and I saw that truck, growing over with grass and weeds, and I had that same thought over and over. Finally, I got to listen to my brain, and Kate was the lucky subject.

Lost Highway Vibes

I also noticed that there was a small road on the way over to the location, and I suggested we go there as well and get a few shots there as well. I took some of my ideas and concepts from my shoot with Mackenzie, just put a country spin to it. Having the sun as a rim light gave some great lighting vibes to the shots. Kate was a phenomenal model with this shoot, and she absolutely killed it.

Looking Back

I loved this shoot, if anything, for the setting, having this much greenery was a welcome change for me. It only made me happier knowing that I was able to work with models I knew were exceptional, and a quality caliber I could rely on.
