Something Different

There was a project that I was able to participate in over 10 years ago. Back then, I did not have a real platform for myself, so when I was doing this, the photos were pigeon-holed away into an unseen corner of the internet. Now, in 2024, I've decided to bring this project back, and give it a proper showcase.

The Project

So I was approached by some high school friends back in the Summer of 2012, they were building their first house, and wanted me to take photographs of the house as it was under construction. At the time, I was working part-time, and loved the idea of getting into a house, and documenting the construction progress. It was helpful to me, because I got to see in-depth how a home was built from the ground up, from how framing would be done, to how piping would be run to the house's different rooms.

Creating Art with Something Not Considered Art

Just as the title states, I had the goal of trying to create artful shots with a construction site, which by most people would consider this very "boring." It was a fun challenge for me to find some very pretty shots, and looking back, I was incredibly happy with what I was able to develop. Originally, I was photographing these in color, but I said to myself, why not do these in black and white? The contrast would probably look much better, and that way, the colors and lighting from different weather would be less noticeable. Not only was I correct in my thinking, but the photos looked significantly better and had more emotional punch than their colorized counterparts.

Digging Out of the Archive

Projects like this have been fun, because I get to dig out photos from my past that may have gotten more attention if I had a mind to promote myself. I did not realize I could use social media as a way to advertise myself, however, Social Media was literally just Facebook and MySpace. Looking back, I wish I could've had the presence of mind to use this project as advertisement, but there's no point regretting choices I did or didn't make, because there is nothing to be done about it now. However, with organizing and cleaning out my photo storage, I find little gems I can do another pass on and develop them to the level I do today. This series of photos have shown me that it's beneficial to revisit your older work, to see what you can learn from them.

Adding to the Print Gallery

I have added the entire series to my Print Gallery, so you can purchase any of these photos either in physical prints, or digital downloads. If you have gotten this far into the BLOG, I would ask you a favor, purchase something from my gallery, every cent helps me create new projects and sustains my equipment. There is a link to my print gallery just beneath this paragraph, go take a look. Thank you so much for reading this, I love to tell stories and help others, and hope you got something out of this.
